Near as I can tell, Nuance Technologies bought up ScanSoft in 07 or 08 and their subsequent versions (10, 11 & 12) of PaperPort are crap.

Originally, Dell shipped this printer with an issue of ScanSoft PaperPort V9 and Adobe Photoshop bundled on the Drivers and Utilities disk. To use the scanner, you must buy scanner software. The downloaded Dell 1600n driver is for the printer only. This machine did not come with the Dell Driver and Utility disk. If you know of another ‘workaround’, let me know. The only viable remedy is to instal a UPS to keep the memory alive during a power failure. The ‘Cancel Button’ does not work and this will make you miss important phone calls until you re-set your user preferences. Once that happens, the machine will take any call on the first ring and, as far as I can tell, there is no way to take the line back and answer the incoming voice call. If the power goes out and comes back on, the 1600n reverts back to the default ‘User Preference’ settings. User preferences are stored in volatile memory.
